Solver replacement/enhancement

All,

I have a large non-linear equation that I have optimized using the solver in Excel. However, the amount of time it took was extensive. Does anyone have any other programs they have used for non-linear optimization that they highly recommend? I am currently looking into Matlab but being that I only have to run this optimization once every few months I don't see it being cost effective.
